How To Improve Your Piano Fluency
P r a c t i c e.
Learning music is like learning a foreign language. We must learn to listen, speak, read, and write. We start off slow and get more fluent over time, eventually making poetry, art, and incredible beauty with our instrument.
7 ways to improve your fluency on the piano:
✔️Start with warm-ups to strengthen your fingers. This is like a musical alphabet. Pronunciation with language or proper technique with music is key.
✔️Play scales with extra lifted fingers. This will develop your ease on the keys.
✔️Practice slowly. In order to play fast, we have to practice slow.
✔️Listen to music as much as possible - any genre! Parents, play your fav music in your home, watch music-themed films, play YouTube concerts or Broadway clips.
✔️Make up your own musical "sentences." Practice writing your own combinations of notes.
✔️Regularly complete simple sight-reading exercises to improve your note reading.
✔️"Speak" the language with friends - musical community and collaboration are so much fun! Play music with friends, play a duet with a sibling or parent, or take piano lessons with a peer for friendly support.
